Please make sure that you have watched the above video for a model answer to a different scenario. This will provide you with an example of the kind of answer what we are expecting you to produce.
2. Read the below scenario. Highlight in yellow the aspects of each strategy that are effective and in blue, the aspects of each strategy that are ineffective.
3. Identify which of the three strategies (A, B or C) is the most appropriate for addressing the situation. Your highlighting of each scenario should assist you in deciding which strategy is most appropriate for dealing with the situation.
4. Justify why you have chosen this strategy. Please consider the impact that it will have on all of the parties in question, as well as the wider school community.
SCENARIO– In the morning, a Year 1 class completes a PSHCE lesson where they learn the NSPCC’s ‘Pantosaurus’ song. This song teaches children about their right to say no and encourages them to speak out if something makes them uncomfortable. At the end of the school day, while dismissing your class, Child A’s mother approaches you, upset and claiming that Child B asked her daughter to show him what was in her pants. You teach both children, and Child A is standing beside her mother as she complains, while Child B is still waiting for his parents to pick him up. How should you respond?
Strategy A: You listen attentively to Child A’s mother, then call Child B over to join you, Child A, and Child A’s mother. Calmly, you ask Child B if they made the inappropriate request, reminding them about the lesson earlier in the day, where they learned that such behaviour is not acceptable. Child B denies having done this. You inform Child B that you will discuss the matter with their parents upon their collection. Afterward, you apologise to Child A’s mother, assuring her that this behaviour will not occur again. Finally, you report the incident as a safeguarding concern using the school’s online safeguarding system.
Strategy B: You ask Child A’s mother if she would mind moving slightly to the side with you so that the other children are not able to hear the complaint. You also ask your teaching assistant if they can keep an eye on the children while you speak to Child A’s mother. After listening carefully to Child A’s mother, you calmly reassure her that the safeguarding team will be informed, who will ensure that the situation is handled properly and that Child A and Child B will remain separated until the issue is resolved. You then ask your teaching assistant to complete the dismissal of the class while you write up the safeguarding concern in detail using the school’s online system.. You then verbally inform a member of the safeguarding team about the incident.
Strategy C: You listen carefully to the complaint and calmly reassure Child A’s mother that you will report the matter to the safeguarding team to ensure it is handled appropriately. You also assure her that Child A and Child B will be kept apart until the safeguarding team has addressed the issue. After asking your teaching assistant to manage the rest of the dismissal, you take Child B aside to a quiet area and ask if they asked to see what is in Child A’s pants today. Child B denies this and asks if their parents will be informed. You explain that you will need to share this information with their parents, as you cannot keep it secret. Finally, you document the safeguarding concern using the school’s online system.
