Preparation for Study Group 3

7.1 Examine the importance of keeping up to-date with recent developments in the trainee’s subject(s) and to consolidate and expand their subject knowledge

Here it is important that trainees see the value of spending time researching, adding to their knowledge base (knowledge refers to factual knowledge, skills and concepts – which the trainee will need to include all 3 aspects of knowledge here). Also, even if they already have the knowledge, it is still important to refresh and think about how to deliver this knowledge age appropriately.

Primary – can select 1 of the core subjects and Secondary the trainee’s main subject.

7.2 Examine the importance of keeping up to-date with recent developments in the trainee’s subject(s) and to consolidate and expand their subject knowledge

This is so important when planning lessons and a lot of trainees don’t naturally do this.

7.3 Analyse the importance of appropriately pitching, sequencing and breaking down knowledge to enable pupils to access the curricula when observing expert colleagues

As this is such an important skill – the trainees do need to analyse this and it fits in well

Primary – can select 1 of the core subjects and Secondary the trainee’s main subject.

7.4 Analyse the importance of having secure subject knowledge when planning and teaching to enable all pupils to make good progress when observing expert colleagues

Again another important skill to have and one that sometimes trainees don’t think about if they have a degree in their subject – they still need to have secure subject knowledge alongside 4.1 and 4.2
