Infective learning objectives, WALTs and learning questions:

LO: To complete a worksheet on telling the time (quarter past, half past and o’clock).
This learning objective is not effective as it focusses on an activity, rather than the knowledge, skills and understanding that the teacher would like the pupils to develop by the end of the lesson.

WALT: gain an understanding of simple Boolean logic.
This WALT is not specific or measurable. What does ‘gain an understanding’ actually mean? How will the teacher or pupils be able to know if the pupils have met this rather unclear and complex learning objective?

LQ: Am I able to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made, identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock and to describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials?
This learning question would absolutely overwhelm most pupils, particularly if they have a lack of prior knowledge about the properties of all of these materials. This learning objective needs to be broken down over a series of lessons to ensure that it is achievable e.g.
Lesson 1 – Am I able to identify and name a variety of everyday materials such as wood, plastic, glass?
Lesson 2 – Am I able to identify and name a variety of everyday materials such as metal, water and rock?
Lesson 3 – Am I able to describe the simple physical properties of wood, plastic, metal, glass, water and rock?
Lesson 4 – Am I able to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made?
